Green Backed Heron - Bird photography and identification
Boat-billed Flycatcher (Megarynchus pitangua)
Boat-billed Flycatcher (Megarynchus pitangua)
Photo description
This bird is often confused with Great Kiskadee (Pitangus sulphuratus) but has an oversized black bill (like a 'swollen nose') with a distinctly decurved culmen. Also there is a definite olive tinge to the back and no rufous on the wings. The other clinching fieldmark separator is the white supercilium which does not meet on the nape like Great K. It is noisy with irritating and unpleasant (to human ears) vocalizations. Most frequent call is a nasal, grating, and mocking nya, nya, nya, nya as it bobs its head. In disputes it has an even louder more insistent squealing. f/7.1, exp comp minus one and two-thirds, iso 1600, 1/50.

A friend of ours just got back from a Trinidad and Tabago trip... You two could have bumped uinto one another! He's a Director at DE Nature Society and they put together a trip of about 6 folks. Can't remember the name of the places they stayed though... What a trip! How many new species did ya add to your list? Hundreds?

Hi Shari, I don't keep real good lists and am mainly interested in the birds I can photograph;)). I think I added photographs of about 75 new birds while in Trinidad and Tobago for a little over a week.
