This was probably the most spectacular bird I saw in Sulawesi. Hornbills in general are spectacular birds and this one is especially colorful. This large Sulawesi, Indonesia endemic (104cm), similar to large mammals, requires large expanses of forest for its survival. Here the male on the right appears to be transferring a food item to the female. Interestingly, the female then appeared to 'practice' feeding babies by repeatedly putting the food into the empty log to the left... This appeared to be practice for the real nesting period when the female actually seals itself up in a tree hole while the male provides food for her and the young... Also included is an uncropped habitat shot. Tangkoko DuaSudara Nature Reserve.
