Golden-collared Toucanet (Selenidera reinwardtii)
Golden-collared Toucanet (Selenidera reinwardtii)
Photo description
From the wooden canopy tower, Sacha Lodge, Ecuador. Male, left with a fruit that was actually just given to him by the female. These birds are quiet and shy although both sexes sing, often in duet. They are also noted for a peculiar horizontal dark line passing through the center of the pupil. Uncommon in east Ecuador and east Colombia. After Caspar Georg Carl Reinwardt (1773-1854) Dutch ornithologist and collector in Java, 1817-1822.

Nice close-up of this exotic bird. I wonder what purpose the dark line in the pupil serves.
