Chubby, with lots of colour and personality, they move through the canopy in pairs or small busy bands. The barbets of Africa and southern Asia are now placed in the Megalaimidae, whilst American barbets form the family Capitonidae (sometimes relegated to the status of ubfamily, Capitoninae), closely related to the toucans and containing 3 genera and 14 species (including the newly discovered, stunning Scarlet-banded Barbet, Capito wallacei from Peru), with 10 occurring in northern South America.
