Long-billed and Short-billed Dowitcher
Long-billed and Short-billed Dowitcher
Photo description
Here are the full body shots. Long-billed Dowitcher (Limnodromus scolopaceus), left and Short-billed Dowitcher (Limnodromus griseus). I wanted to key in on the differences around the eye. The short-billed shows a more arched white supercillium wider in the front. The eye is placed somewhat higher on the face of the short-billed leading to a larger 'loral angle' (a measure of the angle from a line through the gape of the bill and a line through the center of the eye. This also seems to lead to a more sharply angled loral stripe. Some people think this gives the short-billed a more startled look and the long-billed a more relaxed look. Long-billed photographed in early March in Arizona in brackish freshwater and the short-billed in a tidal pool in Costa Rica in January. www.surfbirds.com/ID%20Articles/dowitchers1005/dowitchers... The best field mark for distinguishing the two dowitcher species is voice. Short-billed gives a "call tututu, a staccato series of low, musical notes a bit faster than but similar to those of a Lesser Yellowlegs". Long-billed typically gives a higher pitched keek or peep call often repeated several to numerous times in rapid succession. The difference in voice is regarded as a nearly fail-proof field mark
