This juvenile bird photographed in Iowa in Sept03. A distinguishing feature of the juvenile from a basic plumaged adult are finely marked dark submarginal lines on the tertials, coverts, and scapulars. These fine dark lines separate the light gray feathers from the pale edges. Also This the adults have blackish legs and the immatures have leg color that varies from yellow to green.
