1st year male birds can look identical to females. Purple Finch (Carpodacus purpureus), left and House Finch (Carpodacus mexicanus). The House Finch has a somewhat swollen look to the bill. The Purple Finch has a whitish supercillium against a dark cheek and a dark malar stripe.
