Photographed by Rafy Rodriguez. This is the most abundant and ubiquitous bird in Puerto Rico. It inhabits the coastal plains, including gardens in towns and cities, as well as the central mountains. As you may appreciatte is a very colorful bird very fond of nectar, as well as small insects. Its song is very high pitched. Its distribution is throughout the West Indies with the exception of Cuba, where it is considered a vagrant on a few cays and very locally on the north coast. It has been reported for south Florida as well apparently individuals from the Bahamas. It also occurs in Central and South America.
