Identifying juvenile raptors can be an interesting exercise. From the front it shows streaking as do a lot of them. It is somewhat concentrated higher up on the chest. The clincher can often be the back of the tail. Here there is a broad subterminal band and then 5 or 6 narrow pale bands showing some rufous toward the base. This bird also has the overall stocky look of a buteo and is showing some red on its shoulder.
