First fall female. This is the subdued but interesting coloration of the fall. The Halloween colors of the spring male have been described by Bent (1953) "Blackburnian seems to be a doubly appropriate name, for its upperparts are largely black and its throat burns like a brilliant orange flame amid the dark foliage of the hemlocks and spruces. A glimpse of such a brilliant gem, flashing out from its somber surroundings, is fairly startling" This warbler was actually named after Anna Blackburne, who was a biologist in the late 1700's.
