Common Black-Hawk (Buteogallus anthracinus) and
Great Black-Hawk (Buteogallus urubitinga) also occur in Costa Rica.
The Mangrove species is somewhat smaller with more rufous and white in
the wings and is mostly limited to mangrove swamp areas. This was
taken in the dry forest area of Costa Rica along the northern Pacific
coast along the Gulf of Nicoya at La Ensenada ranch. They feed mostly
on crabs like the one shown which was photographed while on a boat
ride in the mangrove swamps along the Gulfo Nicoya.
