This stocky,
big-headed, large-eyed, heron with huge shoe-shaped bill roosts in
groups of up to 50 by day in trees overhanging water. They fish
solitarily at night often in darker places than Black-crowned
Night-Heron.
Its name is COCHLEARIUS COCHLEARIUS, and in French "SAVACOU HUPPE".
The scientific name is derived from COCHLEARIUM, means "spoon" in Latin.
The bill is used like a big spoon, to catch some quiet preys in shallow
waters. It scoops up shrimps, invertebrates, frogs and fish. It feeds also
small mammals.
It may snap with the bill during the night when it's feeding.
