Named after William Swainson (1789-1855) English
naturalist, artist, collector, and author. Books include 'The natural
arrangement and relations of the family of flycatchers', 1838 and 'A
selection of the birds of Brazil and Mexico', 1841.
Their beak has serrated edges, helping the toucan to hold fruit and food at the tip. The long bill permits them to pluck fruit that are too far, or on thin branches, too thin to support their weight.
Their bill can size 8 inches long, but itÂ’s much lighter than it seems!
