Great Curassow (Crax rubra)
Great Curassow (Crax rubra)
Photo description
female. As large as a guan, but unlike them, the sexes differ. The curassow is considered Globally Near Threatened because of extensive loss of its rainforest habitat, coupled with unchecked hunting pressure and are now scarce or absent near populated areas where regularly pursued for food. They are fairly common in protected areas but remain shy and retiring. Large protected areas such as the 500,000 plus acres around Chan Chich lodge are good places to see large birds such as this, the guans and Chan Chich's signature species the Ocellated Turkey
